Design Statement

March 17, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

Facebook is a social networking website that has more than 64 million users worldwide. With numbers this high, Facebook sees this as a window of opportunity to make a large profit by dealing with large corporations. Our video is to spread the message about what Facebook does with these corporations. As part of a deal with Facebook, these corporations are able to access our information and actively follow our online activities on partner sites.

Our main concept is to show the scary stalking that these large corporations engage in by placing the video out of context. We did this by having live footage of a young man and by doing this, we create a familiar sense of stalking that non-Facebook users can understand and relate to. By taking live footage and digitizing it, we give anonymity to the young man to illustrate that this stalking can happen to anyone. As such, the viewer becomes a part of the video, they are the ones being targeted by Facebook. We also used text in such a format that it to would portray this scary stalking feeling as it comes at you from all angles and flows in a ghostly way. We also used the text to our advantage in that it could take the form of swarming ads by being very in your face and jumbled together at a fast pace at times. This along with the audio comes together nicely to effectively convey our key goal. The audio is reminiscent of that of a computer-like voice and is enhanced by mysterious melody to give off that sense of insecurity due to these stalking ads through various corporations.

Final Comps – Text & Audio

March 17, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

Here are our final comps for the text and audio.

Credits Post #2

March 17, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

This clip above is our third credit try. This one is based off the second credit clip and the only changes we made involve type size. The original is really small and hard to read, so we increased point size, so it becomes readable and legible.

In the end, we decided we would go with the third credit test we did. The type is readable and legible, and there is no harsh or fast movement.

Here are the test clips of our credits.   The clip above was our first try for the credits. It uses a lot of movement but the type is easy to read. Sometimes the movement is a bit too much, and if we pursue this one, we should create a smoother transition between each section. This clip above is our second take for our credits. The type is small and sometimes becomes difficult to read.

Semi-Comps

March 11, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

Due to some technical difficulties (most likely compression issues), we can’t upload our semi-comp to YouTube. Actually, we’ve been having a lot of trouble uploading video footage/semi-comps to YouTube so they have been uploaded to Digital Locker.

To view our newest semi-comp, please click this link. Because of its size, please expect 5-7 minutes for the semi-comp to completely download. There is also no audio clip attached.

This semi-comp gave us a few observations:

  • Stylistic Elements (lighten up some areas instead of having a completely dark/mysterious feel to the video – especially in the end, when the audio content lightens up)
  • Typographic Treatment (give the text more dynamic, more substance by using scale, motion)
  • Logo/Graphic Treatment (give the logos more dynamic, less static characteristics by using scale, motion)
  • Logo/Graphic Treatment (logos disappear into darkness, either lighten up logos with a shadow for an eerie feel or find a new way to treat the logos or delete them as they may compete with the text)
  • Accopanying Text

This is a preview of the usage of text and how it will be applied within our project. Please note that the clip below is not accompanied by our actual footage. Eventually it will be placed in the background however, for test purposes it has remained separate for the time being.

Below is a version of our animated text accompanied by our audio script.

    Motion Tracking Test Clip

    March 9, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

In the last post, we manually moved each logo to trail our actor. However, we’ve now started to explore Motion Tracking in After Effects to help us efficiently and easily have logos trail our actor.

The link below is our second successful clip with Motion Tracking. There are a few shaky areas, and this is only shown for developmental purposes. We have learnt that this feature is best used in close-ups and solid backgrounds. We would like to apply this feature for a few of our scenes that are close-ups or with solid backgrounds.

    Test Clips

    March 7, 2008 by kristinaxxjessica

Here are a few of our test clips on how we’d like to proceed with the logos.

Test 1 (showing a bumpy trailing for Coca Cola)

Test 2 (showing a subtler bumpy trailing for CBS while Coca Cola remains the same)

Test 3 (showing a CBS trailing in a straight line)

Test 4 (showing an alternate introduction for CBS – introduced part way as a pop up and rotates)

Test 5 (showing an alternate introduction for CBS – introduced part way as a pop up and rotates 360 horizontally)

Each of these test clips are dependent on the preceding clip. A critique and analysis of the preceding clip allowed us to build new ideas into the next clip.

At this moment, we would like to treat all logos with the experiments in Test 5. All logos will be introduced as a “pop up”, rotates 360 horizontally and trails in a straight line.
